Free Dog Training Tips - House Breaking Your
Dog
Patrick Solomon
Getting a new
puppy can be an exciting time for anybody in a family, be they
adults or children. The entire process, from making the initial
decision to deciding what type of dog to choosing a dog is
extremely fun. The not-fun part comes when it becomes time to
train the dog. This is when you get to go from playing to being
the “parent”. One of the first things that most owners want
their dog to understand is how to go to the bathroom outside of
the house instead of on your favorite carpet.
House training
a puppy does not have to be the stressful experience that most
believe it to be. It can, and should, take as little as two
weeks to complete. The first thing to remember is that you are
the boss, not the puppy. No matter how cute and cuddly they are,
or how much you want to pick them up and carry them around all
day, you need to remember that you are the boss. Just remember
that puppies that are babied often turn out to be big dogs who
bite.
First set
yourself a schedule. It is important that you realize that if
you can not keep to a schedule, your puppy will not be able to
either. Set aside a specific area that you want the dog to go
potty in. If you give them the entire back yard, they may get
too confused, so try to keep it to a smaller area at first. Once
you have established a routine, start doing it. Put the puppy on
a leash and take him out to the designated area. Wait about five
minutes or so. If he goes, great! Praise him and give him a
little treat. If he does not go, bring him back inside. You want
to make sure that you are watching him well so that when you
start to see the signs that he has to go, you can rush him
outside.
If you see the
puppy starting to go, give a quick “No!” If you yell and startle
him, he may make even more of a mess, so try not to yell. Take
him outside to finish his business, and give him a treat for
doing so. Make sure, when it’s time to clean up the mess that
was made, that you use a cleaning product that will completely
kill the odor. Dogs tend to use the same area over and over, and
if he can smell the scent, he’ll likely go again.
