Marker Based Obedience Training

Patrick Solomon

This is a training style that is based on the reward system.  You will also use a keyword such as ‘yes’ or a clicker.  The keyword or clicker will then be followed by a reward.  It is no longer acceptable to scold your dog viciously if they do not respond to a command.  This will only serve to make your dog afraid of you and will not help the dog obedience training.  It is important for you and your dog to have mutual respect during the training process.

If you have a good relationship with your dog then the training process will run a lot more smoothly.  If you have a good, trusting relationship with your dog, then it will usually eliminate the need for harmful learning tool.  This can be choke chains or pinch collars.

However, it is important to start dog obedience training as soon as possible.  If your dog is still a puppy then this is the most ideal time.  It is during this time that their brains will be craving information and they will have an intense desire to learn.  However, the process might become complex because puppies tend to be much more excited than older dogs.  But if you can successfully train your puppy, then it will grow up to be a smart, trustworthy dog.

When using marker based dog obedience training, it is important to use a reward that your dog responds well to.  This could be a favorite dog snack or anything that the dog craves.  This will quickly teach them that whenever they perform a task correctly, they will be rewarded with a treat.

It has been proven by professional dog trainers that this method works a lot better than disciplining your dog.  Instead of getting mad at them when they do something wrong, praise them when they do it right.  Dogs are much smarter than we give them credit for, so they will quickly figure out which is the right way to follow a command.  And their insatiable desire for treats will make them want to learn even more.  One thing to remember is that you want your dog to trust you.  This will make it a lot easier during the training process so you need to establish trust with your dog from a very early age.  You can accomplish this by praising them and never raising your voice in their direction.
